Paul graduated from Curtin University in Perth in 1987 with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Medical Laboratory Science majoring in Biochemistry and Microbiology.
In 1987 he started with Western Diagnostic Pathology as a Blood Bank Scientist and in 1989 became a country relief Scientist and worked in the following Western Diagnostic Pathology laboratories: Karratha, Alice Springs as Lab Manager, Darwin, and at The Mount Hospital.
In 1995 Paul returned to Perth and worked in Biochemistry and in 1996 became the Laboratory Manager of The Mount Hospital lab.
