It is possible in many circumstance for additional testing to be performed on blood samples already held within the laboratory without the need to collect further specimens from the patient.
Western Diagnostic Pathology will endeavour to perform additional testing however the ability to perform further testing is dependent on several conditions including the following:-
Sample Availability-Additional testing can be performed if the sample has not been discarded. Most blood specimens are disposed after one week. However there are some exceptions. For example serology samples are frozen and are retained for much longer.
Specimen Stability- Some tests require testing within a certain time period. A fresh specimen may be required for some additional tests.
Correct Sample Collected- Additional testing can only be performed if the correct sample type has been collected for the additional test required.
Specific Collection Requirements. – Additional testing can only be performed only if the specific collection requirements have been adhered to for the additional test required. (i.e fasting or sample requires freezing within a specific time).
Sufficient sample remains- Sometimes the sample may be exhausted during the testing process with no sample remaining for further testing.
