How to book
If you have a referral for an iron infusion treatment to book call 0437 435 537.
What is it?
An iron infusion is a medical procedure where iron is delivered directly into your bloodstream through an intravenous (IV) drip. It’s used to quickly replenish iron levels when oral supplements aren’t effective or suitable. This treatment helps your body make healthy red blood cells and restore energy.
Why it’s done
Iron infusions are used to treat iron deficiency and iron deficiency anaemia. They’re recommended when:
- Oral iron supplements aren’t working or cause side effects like nausea or constipation
- You can’t absorb iron properly due to conditions like Crohn’s disease or coeliac disease
- You need a rapid iron boost before surgery, during pregnancy, or after blood loss
- You have chronic conditions like kidney disease or heart failure
- You can’t have a blood transfusion for medical or personal reasons.

What to expect
The procedure is simple and usually done in a clinic or hospital:
- You’ll be seated comfortably, and a nurse will insert a small cannula into a vein in your arm or hand.
- Iron is slowly infused through an IV drip over 15 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the dose and formulation.
- You’ll be monitored during and after the infusion for any side effects.
- Most people can go home the same day and return to normal activities.
You may need more than one infusion depending on your iron levels. These are usually spaced at least a week apart [1].
How to prepare
To ensure a smooth experience:
- Drink plenty of water before your appointment to help with vein access
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing with sleeves that roll up easily
- Tell your doctor about any allergies, medications, or past reactions to iron
- Stop oral iron supplements 7 days before your infusion (unless advised otherwise)
- Eat a light meal before your appointment — fasting is not required
What results mean
Iron infusions help your body:
- Increase haemoglobin levels — improving oxygen delivery
- Restore iron stores — reducing fatigue and weakness
- Improve symptoms like dizziness, shortness of breath, and poor concentration
Follow-up: You’ll usually have a blood test 6 weeks after the infusion to check your iron levels and response.
